North Television transmits on UHF 40/623.25 MHZ, and reaches over
45,000 households in the greater Whangarei area. Transmission is 24
hours a day, and local programmes screen between
1 pm – 11 pm
. At other times the station rebroadcasts Stratos,
a nation wide satellite service broadcasting current events, news
and documentaries, and other international satellite programming.
Who
are we?
Northland TV Charitable Trust is an organisation that runs a
community television station based in
Whangarei
,
New Zealand
. Our Board of Trustees has a broad
representation of the community. Within the arts we have
representation from the Visual Arts, Music, and Video sectors, and
we have strong representation from the education and business
sectors of community.
Our transmission equipment is owned by
Manaia
View
School
, who we have a strong partnership with and who
are a third shareholder of Channel North Television.
Channel North Television employs 6 full time paid staff; Station
Manager, Project Manager, Producer, two Production staff, and an
administrator.
Manaia
View
School
employs a full time Producer to produce Pukeko
Echo, a children’s show made by children for children. They also
employ a full time Media teacher, to ensure all the surrounding
intermediate age children are trained in television, for input in
Pukeko Echo.
Channel North Television also employs two part time voluntary staff;
a business manager and a Broadcast
Technician. We also rely heavily on the voluntary time and efforts
of another 36 people. These people are from our board of trustees,
the Diploma in Digital MultiMedia at NorthTec, and students from
local schools taking part in work placement programmes.
Our
strongest representation is from the educations sector with our
three main partners with stakes in that sector, 155 Community House,
Northtec, and
Manaia
View
School
. 155 Community House manages the 155 Kura,
which has a strong focus on helping kids that do not fit into the
current educational system. Northtec, the local polytechnic in
Whangarei, focuses on getting our young people ready for the wide
world in their industry of choice, and lifelong learning.
Manaia View School, a local primary school, has a strong focus on
education not being something that you just do at school, but
something that you do as a family, as a community.
Our History
Northland TV Charitable Trust started in late 2005 after a meeting
of community organisations interested in investigating the
possibility of providing a local television station. There was
representation from four main groups;
Manaia
View
School
who would host the Station and provide a link to
all other local schools, One Double Five Community House and
NorthTec who are currently offering film courses, and Directors
and Producers interested in a regional station to showcase local
material.
Our
Vision
We have seen a severe lack in the multimedia industry in Northland.
Local producers struggle to get by and our local talent in
this area subside on dead end jobs or on benefits until they get
their chance to shine. One of the major problems is that when
our local talent get a chance to shine it is elsewhere. Whangarei
is slowly loosing its most precious resource, its people. Our
long term goal is to not only stop the slow migration away from
Whangarei but reverse it, attracting talented people to our area.
