Öppna Kanalen Närke is an open TV channel in Sweden. (also called public access or community media). It reaches approx. 45 000 households in the county of Närke, where the three towns Örebro, Kumla and Hallsberg are located. The organization has 17 members that share the airtime on the channel. It also has a board of 7 people that works voluntarily. The channel was founded in 1997 and was then called ‘Örebro När tv’. A name change took place in the fall of 2008 since the old name was insufficient as the channel broadcast in more cities than one.
‘Öppna Kanalen Närke’ was chosen to
emphasize that the channel belongs to the ‘Riksförbundet öppna kanaler I Sverige’. In april 2008 the channel started a youth project with
funding from ‘Allmänna Arvsfonden’. The project was named ‘Ung Arena’ and the goal of the project was to teach young people up to 26 years old to do their own TV productions. The project have had over 100 participants since the start and about 10-20 young people make up a youth editorial staff, that meets once a week and produces two TV-shows together ‘Neon’, our talk show, and ‘F-som I film’, our movie program. The segment from Sweden is produced by young people from ‘Ung Arena’.
